On May 17, 2009 eight members of the Loveland Marine Corps League tackled the mission of repainting the Howitzer.
The day began before 9:00 AM with rakes, shovels and leaf blowers, clearing away wood chips from all around and inside the cannon. That was followed by the sound of grinders blazing, taking off layers of paint and rust and roughing up the smooth barrel and other areas, well warn from years of enjoyment by Loveland's children.
Next the power washing cleaned the dirt and grime for the historic artillery piece. That was followed by drying with the leaf bowers and a coat of gray primer.
After a few hours of drying the final coat of green paint was applied and the day was finished at 5:00 PM.
The Marines gathered at the cannon at 9:00 on Tuesday morning to finish some touch up, remove the tape form the brass knobs and replace the wood chips.
Thanks to Marines Doyle Biggs, Terry Wright, Joe Novak, John Merritt, Jack Ashley, Alan Woodhams, Charlie Nibbelin and Tom Buchanan the feat was accomplished in one day.
The Loveland Marine Corps League and the Sweet Heart Auxiliary are always looking for new members to get involved with helping our veterans and community projects to make Loveland a wonderful; place to live. We meet on the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 PM at the All Vets Club at Cleveland and Third streets. Our web site is http://mcl-loveland-1250.com
