Pancake Breakfast at Applebees
A week later we held an extremely succesful pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebees on May 21, 2011. It was enjoyed by people of all ages.
Before we started serving pancakes Commandant Martinez swore in two new members, David Sommerdorf and Associate Member Pastor Bruce Miller. We held this ceremony outside in front of the Marine Vette that Marine David Sommerdorf puts on display at different events around the Country in remembrance of what happened on 9-11. This was also a big success and we had great participation from our Members!

Bells of Freedom
|
Our Bell of Freedom has been delivered.
It is a full 14 inches in diameter, weighing 62 pounds, and with a heavy clapper, it has a deep rich tone.
|
For those that do not know, the Loveland Detachment participates in Loveland's 60 year tradition of ringing the Bells of Freedom from 0400 to 0600 on Veterans Day.
Loveland is one of two communities in Colorado who still ring the bells of freedom just as they had done on Nov. 11, 1918. It was then that bells of all kinds rang around the world to signify the ‘war that was to end all wars' was over.
The bells as a sign of hope and peace, but we also ring them in honor of the veterans. The bells range in sizes from large church and school bells to the small farm dinner bells. Last year there were 15 trucks with a bell. Each truck has its own area of the city to ring their bell as they go through neighborhood streets from 4 to 6 a.m.
When the weather gets warmer we will constuct and paint a frame for the bell.

Second Flag Disposal Bin
|
|
Marines, we have a second retired mailbox to transform into a Flag Disposal Bin. This one will be a roving bin that will be placed at local businesses for a period of time. This will help the business and the detachment in our quest to see that worn flags are properly disposed of.
We will be painting the bin when the weather warms up and let you know how you can get invovled.
If you are a business owner and would like to host our flag disposal bin please contact one of our officers.

Lost and Found
When I went to pick up the tickets at Applebee’s the manager asked me if I could do him a favor. It seems that sometime in the past few months a Marine was in the restaurant and his challenge coin must have fell out of his pocket. The manager wanted to know if I could track him down and return his coin. I said it sounded like a challenge to me, so I have the coin.
Well we ran the story in the Loveland Reporter Herald and got a call from the grateful owner.

The flag bin was installed on September 1, 2008 and there has been a steady flow of flags being deposited in the bin.
The bin gets emptied twice a week. We have collected over 2,000 flags for proper disposal! Ooh Rah!
We receive quite a few 6 x 10 foot flags that are in pretty fair condition that would make good candidates for flag retirement ceremonies. If you know of any Scouts that would like one have them contact me.
The flags have ranged in size from tiny toothpick size to a giant 20' x 38' garrison flag.
Needless to say this is a great service to the citizens of Loveland who have shown their appreciation and respect for our flag by using the disposal bin.
A special thanks to the Loveland Fire Department for taking on the task of ensuring they are respectfully retired. Also, a big round of applause goes to Abel Herrera for collecting the last 1,000 flags. The new flag collector is Marine Charlie Nibblin.
Some flags have special meanings and here are a some of those
